If the shoe fits....

Many times, a simple footprint has linked a villain
to a crime scene!  Even though many people might
have the same size and style of Converse
sneakers, the criminal may have a specific 'wear
pattern' that is pretty unique!
Shoeprints, as well as tires and tools, leave
impressions behind and we call those pieces of
evidence -
'class evidence.'    Class evidence
excludes large groups of items, but can't necessarily
identify a single one.  The tread pattern and wear
pattern might narrow down the make and model of car
or shoe...but that just gives the police a good jump
start on things.
The three basic types of shoe prints are as follows:

  • Patent - visible prints.  If the criminal tracks through the mud and
then steps on the floor, this is a patent print.

  • Plastic - the three-dimensional print left in the surface, such as mud.

  • Latent - invisible to the naked eye but can be a thin layer of invisible
oils and grime from the sole of the shoes.
